Free agents are unregistered players. They are not currently tied to a club's registered squad, which makes them especially useful during the season. Unlike registered players, free agents can be registered to your club at any time, even when the main transfer window is closed.

Why free agents matter

Footium has registration windows. During pre-season, the unlimited window lets clubs register and unregister players freely. Once that window closes at kick-off on Game Day 1, squad movement becomes more restricted.

The big exception is the free agent rule: unregistered players can be registered at any time. This means a free agent can solve an urgent squad problem immediately. If you have an injury, suspension, retirement issue, weak position or tactical change, a free agent may be the quickest way to strengthen your team without waiting for the next unlimited window.

Free agents can come from different situations. Some may be players that clubs chose to unregister before a window closed. Others may enter the market as part of a mid-season free agent drop. The season structure includes a point where a batch of unregistered players enters the market mid-season, and those players can be registered immediately.

Free agents compared with registered players

A registered player is tied to a club. You can still buy that player, but if the transfer happens during a closed window or limited window, they usually remain at the selling club until the next unlimited registration window opens. The selling club can continue using them in matches, although they cannot train. The buyer owns the player, but cannot register and use them until the correct registration moment.

A free agent is different. Once bought or signed, they can be registered straight away. That makes them much more practical for immediate matchday use.

If your priority is long-term value, you might still buy a registered player and wait. If your priority is this week's line-up, check for free agents first.

How to find free agents

The easiest method is to use the Transfer Market registration filter.

1. Go to https://footium.club/game/transfer-market.
2. Use the Registration filter.
3. Select Unregistered players.
4. Review player profiles before buying or signing.

During the season, the market automatically defaults to showing only free agents, helping you avoid buying a player you cannot use immediately. You can manually change the filter if you want to browse registered players as well.

You can also check a player's profile. If they are unregistered, you should see no club badge next to their name. Their squad view shows the Footium F logo instead of a team crest. Their profile includes a red ❌ shield under Registration Status.

Always double-check in-game before buying. External marketplace metadata may not be fully up to date, but the in-game Footium page shows the most accurate registration status.

How to use free agents well

Free agents are not just emergency cover. They can be used strategically.

If you are short on rotation, sign a player who can cover multiple familiar positions. If you are managing condition, add depth in roles that lose condition quickly. If a player is suspended, a free agent can prevent your line-up being auto-filled. If you are developing younger players, an experienced free agent can cover matches while prospects train.

When evaluating a free agent, check age, rating, potential, stamina, leadership and position fit. A higher-rated player may help immediately, but a younger player with remaining potential could become part of your longer plan. Remember that players retire at 32 and play their final season at 31.

Free agents can be signed directly with a card or Apple Pay. Academy and free agent signing fees also contribute to the cash reward pool, with 80% going into rewards and 20% retained as revenue.

In short, free agents are the flexible part of squad building. They let you react during a closed window and keep your season moving.
